In the ’90s and aughts, Boston’s Karate brought jazz learning, earnest songwriting and a penchant for intelligent risk-taking to American indie-rock. In Karate’s music, the vulnerability and tension-and-release dynamics of early emo met elastic, jazz-influenced interplay, dizzying mathy rhythms and slowcore’s doomy crunch.
